This month's newsletter dives into the importance of core stability, explaining why it's effective after abdominal surgery as well as showing why starting with the basics of core stability is essential even if you're physically fit and healthy. We'll also provide a couple of videos on how Pilates can be beneficial for improving core stability after abdominal trauma, surgery or even if you're post-partum.
The Importance of Core Stability
Recovering from abdominal surgery or trauma is more than just healing incisions; it's about regaining strength, mobility, and confidence. Core stability plays a vital role in this process, as your core is central to nearly every movement your body makes. Here's why focusing on core stability should be a priority during your recovery:
1. Supports Healing: A strong and stable core reduces strain on your abdominal muscles and surgical site, allowing tissues to heal without unnecessary stress.
2. Improves Balance and Posture: Core stability helps maintain proper posture, which can prevent compensatory pain in other areas, such as the back or hips, while your body heals.
3. Restores Mobility Safely: Strengthening your core facilitates safe movement, reducing the risk of injury or complications as you reintroduce daily activities.
4. Enhances Confidence: Feeling stable and secure in your movements builds up confidence, empowering you to resume your active lifestyle.
Even if you're fit and healthy, starting with the basics of core stability is crucial. It forms the foundation for all movements and enhances overall fitness. A strong, stable core improves posture, coordination and athletic performance, as well as reducing the risk of injury. Overall, core exercises train the muscles to work in harmony, leading to better balance and steadiness. Stability is important whether you're an athlete, in early stages of rehab or just doing regular, daily activities.
Pilates focus - For Abdominal Rehab
We have created two videos that demonstrate a sequence of Pilates exercises to help with early rehab for abdominal trauma, surgery or post-partum. Part 1 of the video focuses on the basics and how to activate the muscles. Once you have completed the sequence in part 1, move onto part 2, where it teaches you how to add movement alongside the activation - https://youtu.be/Ix06n75Exx0
