Knee Pain When Running: Should You Run Through It?

Knee pain can be frustrating when running is an important part of your fitness or wellbeing. One of the most common questions is whether you should keep running or stop completely.

There is no universal answer because ‘knee pain' describes a symptom, not a single diagnosis.

What may contribute to running-related knee pain?

A recent increase in mileage or intensity, hills, changes in training frequency, strength and capacity, previous injury and different knee structures can all be relevant. Assessment helps establish which factors matter in your case.

Do you always need complete rest?

Not necessarily. Depending on the presentation, modifying distance, speed, frequency or another aggravating activity while beginning rehabilitation may be appropriate. Other injuries require a different approach, which is why significant or persistent symptoms should be assessed.

Building back to running

A rehabilitation plan may include strengthening the muscles around the knee and hip, improving tolerance to load and gradually increasing running demands. Progress should be based on your symptoms and goals rather than a generic programme.

If knee pain is persisting, worsening or repeatedly interrupting your running, Revive Health Chelmsford can assess the problem and help plan your return to activity.
