Back Pain After Sitting at a Desk: What Can You Do?

A working day spent moving between a desk, car and sofa can leave your back feeling stiff or uncomfortable. There is rarely one ‘perfect' sitting posture that prevents every episode of back pain; changing position and maintaining regular movement can be more practical than trying to sit rigidly all day.

Start with movement variety

Try breaking up prolonged sitting regularly. Stand, walk briefly, change position or perform comfortable movements. Your workstation should support the tasks you perform, but ergonomics are only one part of the picture.

Strength and activity matter too

Regular physical activity and appropriate strengthening can help build confidence and capacity for everyday demands. If a particular movement causes pain, the solution is not necessarily to avoid that movement forever; it may need to be assessed and gradually reintroduced.

When recurring back pain deserves assessment

Consider assessment if pain keeps returning, is limiting work or activity, or you are unsure how to exercise safely. Physiotherapy can assess movement and function and help create a programme suited to your needs.

New or changing bladder/bowel symptoms, numbness around the saddle area, significant progressive weakness or other serious symptoms require urgent medical assessment.
